RoHS 2: Fact or Fiction

Posted on Monday, December 15, 2014 by Dave Watson

There seems to be a great deal of confusion and misinformation regarding the RoHS Directive.  If you would kindly indulge me, I’ll get on my soapbox and try to clear something up.

RoHS 2, ROHS II or however you care to write it, simply does not exist! This is terminology that the industry invented and it gained a great deal of traction in some quarters. But, strictly speaking, there is no such thing as ROHS 2.

The original legislation that the EU passed was something called “Directive 2002/95/EC on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment”.  Then, in 2011 the EU Parliament passed “Directive 2011/65/EU on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment” One of the facts that often gets overlooked is that one of the articles in the newer RoHS Directive specifically repeals the former RoHS Directive. So Directive 2002/95/EC is no longer a valid or enforceable. It was simply repealed and replaced with Directive 2011/65/EU.  This is why you won’t see RoHS 2 terminology used on Alpha’s website, catalog or datasheets.  What you will see is our usage of the current RoHS directive.

Just remember to make sure you focus on current RoHS directives when searching for the appropriate wire and cable products for your application needs.
