NFPA 79 Standards
NFPA79: Electrical Standard for Industrial Machinery is the electrical standard that has been developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and is "intended to minimize the potential hazard of electrical shock and electrical fire hazards of industrial metalworking machine tools, woodworking machinery, plastics machinery and mass produced equipment, not portable by hand." (NFPA 79).
The latest revision allows for cables with only recognized (i.e. AWM) approvals to be used for NFPA 79 in certain circumstances as long as the cables fit specific requirements. (The 2007 edition of NFPA 79 prohibited the use of wires and cables with only AWM Recognition.)

The 2012 edition of NFPA 79 allows cables with only AWM approvals to be used in NFPA 79 applications as long as the following conditions are met:
1. The cable meets a UL VW-1 or CSA FT2 flame test.
2. The cable is printed with all the information, including manufacturer’s name or trademark, wire type, voltage rating, and size.
3. The cable is manufactured in accordance with the AWM style.
4. The cable is used in accordance with the respective AWM style.
Although Alpha Wire can ensure the first three conditions, the fourth condition is the responsibility of the product user. Product users are responsible for determining the applicability of legislation and regulations based on their specific usage of the product.
